A Couple of Quotes by Thomas Szasz…

¤

“There is no psychology, only biography and autobiography.”

That is approximately a quote from Dr. Thomas Szasz, a psychiatrist.

In essence, he posits that the mind cannot be diseased, only the body can. Mental illness is a metaphor that has outlived any usefulness it might once have had. Now, it seems “mental illness” is often used for making excuses. In essence, this doctor posits, the only thing that really exists that could be anything close to mental illness are “problems in living”. Us humans can have problems that can cause personal distress. They can be overcome with clear thinking, logic, and persistence. And sometimes, in order to get help for these problems, humans must make up lies in order for mental health professionals to believe that they really need or deserve help. In turn, these professionals lie and deceive themselves in to thinking that these people really are sick in anyway beyond experiencing problems in living. This is of course, all theory.

Another quote by Szasz is as follows.

“Clear thinking requires courage rather than intelligence.”

Have a nice day. :)
